Inventive talent and the pleasure invested in research and development are facets traditionally attributed to people from Baden-Württemberg. In addition to this, the German Southwest is also an important location nationwide with regard to the cultural and creative industry. Companies in these fields are, without doubt, providers of employment. The average rate of employment in this sector is more than twice the amount compared to the national economy annually. The creative industry includes11 fields: the film and broadcast industry, music industry, design industry, architectural sector, book and art market, press and advertising market, performing arts market as well as software and games industry. In 2007 approx. 28,500 companies in the cultural and creative industry generated almost 20 billion Euro sales. This equals 2.7 percent of the national economy. Dr. Birgit Buschmann, director of division at Ministry of Economic Affairs Baden-Wuerttemberg, reports on the framework needed for a growing creative industry, and she also explains what makes a location attractive for the creative class.
